Outside the Conversation
The world’s major design awards were built around architecture, mobility, consumer electronics, and medical equipment. Fishing tackle was never part of that conversation. Rods were judged by anglers, in the field, on terms the design world had no reason to examine.
That changed in 2022, when the DESTROYER and COOKAI series became the first fishing rods to receive a Red Dot Design Award and were exhibited at the Red Dot Design Museum in Essen. Four years later, the boundary is gone entirely.
The Triple Crown
On September 14, 2026, the DESTROYER EVOLUZION was named a recipient of the IDEA Silver Award.
The International Design Excellence Awards are hosted by the Industrial Designers Society of America and have run for more than forty-five years, drawing thousands of entries annually from professional designers worldwide. Alongside Germany’s iF Design Award and Red Dot Design Award, IDEA completes the group generally recognized as the world’s three major design awards.
Three Juries, One Rod
The EVOLUZION had already taken an iF Design Award and a Red Dot Design Award in 2025. The IDEA Silver closes the set.
No fishing rod had done it before. Three juries, evaluating the same object against different criteria on two continents, arrived at the same conclusion.
For Yuki Ito, the win extends a record that includes more than 200 Good Design Awards from the Japan Institute of Design Promotion, accumulated across two decades of continuous recognition.
A Permanent Address
With the IDEA win, the DESTROYER EVOLUZION enters the permanent collection of the Henry Ford Museum, where IDEA-winning work is archived alongside designs including the original iPhone.
A fishing rod now sits in that record. Not as a curiosity, but as industrial design.
The Shaft
The EVOLUZION blank is a high-density composite of ultra-low resin, high-modulus MX40 carbon graphite fiber, and shape-memory titanium microfibers.
The combination is built to behave differently under different loads. Under high load — casting, hookset, a fish turning — the titanium returns resilience and strength. Under low load — rig manipulation, reading lure action, sensing bottom composition — the high-modulus carbon and ultra-transmissive titanium deliver clarity.
Most blanks are optimized toward one end of that range. This one is engineered for both.
The blank is finished in Galactic Strontium, with a copper composite carbon hood and Fuji titanium-frame SiC-S guides in an ITO setting.
Where the Hand Meets the Rod
Two components carry most of the ergonomic argument.
The ITO ENGINEERING SLANT BRIDGE is machined from a solid aluminum block and functions as a milled down-frame balancer. Its weight-saving holes vary in diameter from one side to the other, an asymmetry that optimizes balance in the tip section and improves casting efficiency. It expands wrist mobility for underhand and backhand casting into deep, complex structure, and doubles as an extension grip for single-handed bracing against hard-fighting fish.
The EVOLUZION HEAD LOCKING SYSTEM comes out of Ito Engineering’s HTI, or Human Tackle Interface, development. A multi-axis structure machined from a solid high-strength aluminum block, it increases shaft rigidity once a reel is mounted, prioritizing comfort, strength, and vibration transmission in that order.
Neither part is decorative. Both exist because the hand is where sensitivity is either delivered or lost.
Form Follows Emotion
We’ve carried the same maxim for decades. Form follows emotion.
It is a deliberate revision of the modernist principle, and the EVOLUZION is the clearest argument for it. The functional case is settled — three juries confirmed it independently. But function was never the whole of what the rod was built to do.
Three juries have now judged the EVOLUZION as an object. The water judges it as a tool. It was built to answer both.
