Healing Heroes: Anglers learn from service veterans
Edwin Evers, the 2016 GEICO Bassmaster Classic champion, has once again made supporting wounded veterans a priority through the Optima Batteries Healing Heroes In Action Tour. This heartfelt initiative provides injured military service members with the opportunity to experience the thrill of competitive bass fishing alongside professional anglers.
A Life-Changing Perspective
One of this year’s participants, Levi Crawford, is a veteran who survived a devastating 2010 attack in Afghanistan. The explosion left him blind in one eye and with severe injuries to his right arm. Despite his challenges, Crawford maintains a positive outlook, stating, “If that hadn’t happened, I wouldn’t be here fishing with Edwin.” His perspective embodies the resilience and gratitude that Evers aims to highlight through the event.
A Community Effort
With the first of four events taking place in Madill, Oklahoma, Evers received significant local support. The Savage family generously provided access to their well-managed bass fishing lakes, even going so far as to install new boat ramps to accommodate full-size bass boats. The fundraising component of the event benefits the Wounded Warriors In Action Foundation, further supporting injured veterans.
The Competitive Spirit
The competition featured four teams, each consisting of a wounded veteran and a professional angler. Evers enlisted fellow Bassmaster Elite Series pros Chris Zaldain and Timmy Horton to lead the teams. Participants embraced the friendly competition, with spirited banter setting the tone for a memorable day on the water.
A Day to Remember
Crawford and Evers dominated the event, securing first place with a three-bass total of 17 pounds, 12 ounces. Crawford’s biggest catch of the day—a 7-pound, 11-ounce bass—helped clinch the victory. Other veterans, including Tyson Scott and Grady Rakestraw, also made significant strides in their fishing skills, thanks to guidance from their professional counterparts.
More Than Just Fishing
Beyond the competition, the Healing Heroes In Action Tour serves as a therapeutic and rewarding experience for veterans. It provides a sense of camaraderie, adventure, and healing—proving that the sport of bass fishing can be both a passion and a powerful tool for rehabilitation.
