When fishing around grass and isolated rock, the DARK SLEEPER can be utilized mid-column like a #swimbait and then dropped to the lake floor on the pause to be fished like a jig—all without skipping a beat.

During the 2024 #BassmasterClassic, Megabass pro, Brandon Palaniuk targeted rock transitions that paired up with subtle contour changes by “floating” a crankbait. Many of these areas were very small and would only require a few casts, so he would fish as many of these areas as possible throughout the day.
The SUPER-Z Z2 crankbait was his bait of choice for fishing these 2-5ft zones with a technique Brandon refers to as “floating”, a slow and methodical approach that incorporates the lures float in the retrieve. Using a crankbait with a deeper dive range is key, providing constant bottom contact and enabling a much slower retrieve speed than would otherwise be possible. This allowed Brandon to fish the Z2 very similarly to how one drags a jig through cover. The hard bill material and precisely tuned internals of the Z2 allowed him to feel every rock and maneuver through gnarly stump fields, while the lure’s quick startup action after deflection ensured no missed bite opportunities 🎣

Cobi located these fish on the edge of a spawning flat in 5-7 feet of water where sparse vegetation remained from the 2023 season. To keep his VISION ONETEN MAT PERCH above the tops of the weeds, he opted to use monofilament line on his DESTROYER P5 ONETEN STICK. The line`s buoyancy kept the jerkbait from digging into the weeds, and with water temperatures holding at a frigid 35-37 degrees, 5-10 second pauses between jerks were a must to trigger these frigid Northern behemoths to bite!
